Teachers list 7 strategies to increase impact of scientific articles

According to the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), three professors from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), listed on the list of the researchers with the highest scientific productivity in the institution, listed seven strategies to expand the impact of academic articles.

The relevant academic production is one of the challenges for those who want to obtain approval in master’s and doctoral programs, need to stay in courses and for teachers. The publication of articles still counts points in the selection of students for scholarships, exchange and postgraduate programs.

In the #UFJF Opportunities column this week, teachers reveal strategies, such as being part of research groups and training as early as possible.

1 – Ask clear questions to get to the topic

It is important that the research problem is very clear and answers objective questions. According to the professor of the School of Communication Iluska Coutinho, although it seems obvious, the research has to answer what until then is not known. “It should merge a good dose of innovation and launch a new look at a certain theme. So a good question is a big step in building a good article. “In addition to choosing the topic, the structure of the work should have theoretical grounds. The bibliographic review accompanies the proposal of the article.

2 – Train and learn from mistakes

During the scientific trajectory, ups and downs are common. Over the course of your career, submitted articles may be declined. With this, we must review the mistakes made. For the professor of the Faculty of Economics Fernando Perobelli, understanding these “no” helps to develop better articles. “At first, it may be a downside in our career, but in fact, you should learn from those flaws, whether in the choice of the journal or even in the restructuring of the research question. This is what enhances their insertion, offering works of higher quality “, emphasizes the professor.

Iluska Coutinho points out that to carry out scientific work from an early age is a way of already working out a path in research, improving in the elaboration of articles, getting used to methodologies and references in the area. “It is interesting that students participate in scientific studies and take advantage of opportunities during graduation. Scientific initiation projects help in this learning process. “

3 – Participate in group and research network

In order to provide the exchange of knowledge and experiences, Professor Fernando Perobelli suggests the participation in a network of researchers. For him, these groups are considered one of the most important requirements for the advancement of science, allowing interaction with other researchers, sharing of results and difficulties, as well as the production of collaborative and long-term research. In the groups, teachers guide the production of articles, indicate reference works, encourage the publication of the results and stimulate the critical analysis among the participants.

4 – Learn from reference studies in the field and publish in quality journals

Submission of papers should privilege national and international journals of the area of activity and that actually exert influence in the target group of researchers. Reading the articles of the journal, in addition to collaborating to broaden the range of knowledge, the reader can still find out what sources are cited in the studies, the methodology, the average time required for the research development and the reasons that led to the acceptance of the article.

The professor of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Augusto Cerqueira advises to publish in scientific journals indexed with high impact factor and that allows online access to the content. To maximize the possibility of access to the article, one option is to publish in open access journals.

Iluska emphasizes that the publication in magazines depends a lot of the norms of submission, being able to vary between them. Publishing an article in more than one journal can be bad because it loses the novelty, sought by many magazines. “It pays to publish less, but with quality, rather than reproduce in many and in periodicals with little evaluation.”

5 – Produce reproducible researches

A clear article with available data, detailed methodology and correct references help make “reproducible research”, that is, it can be tested more easily by another researcher. The reproduction adapted to obtain new results brings more references, citations, for the study, as well as critics, according to Professor Cerqueira.

According to the type of study, for a research to be reproducible, it is still necessary that the author list configurations of the environment, system or equipment that used to reach the results. In the production of computer programs and applications, this practice is already used, called open source or open source.

6 – Submit work to funding agencies

Getting support in research funding agencies indicates the recognition of the researcher’s qualifications. Another advantage is the submission of the study to the peer evaluation. The approval also brings national and international visibility, as Iluska points out.

7 – Diversify the forms of disclosure

When publicizing the work, it is essential to go beyond traditional presentations in congresses. Other options are: sharing content on social networks (academic or otherwise), granting interviews to portals, newspapers, radio and TV; create post for blogs; participate in podcasts; produce video for Youtube and other platforms and make the file available for download in scientific repositories. The UFJF itself has channels of scientific dissemination in the three portals (Portal UFJF, Student and Server), A3 Magazine, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.
